Adam Aznou might finally discover if he has Everton future after Vitalii Mykolenko blow

Adam Aznou will shortly discover if he has a future at Everton after all.

The Moroccan left-back arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium from Bayern Munich last summer but has not made a breakthrough under David Moyes, making just one senior appearance.

That rare outing came in the FA Cup defeat by Sunderland on January 10, but it still wasn’t enough to dislodge Vitalii Mykolenko from the starting XI.

The 19-year-old has been restricted to limited chances even in Mykolenko’s absence, with Jarrad Branthwaite and even James Garner tasked to play out of position.

However, after Mykolenko seemingly suffered an injury blow during the international break, Aznou will hope to finally be given the run of matches he so craves.

Adam Aznou in Everton last-chance saloon

It does appear that his decision to take the next step of his career with the Blues has badly backfired, while the speculation over Moyes’ new contract could push Aznou to leave.

He has yet to make his Premier League debut despite making the squad 21 times. When he was given his maiden bow in the FA Cup, he won a late penalty, but he hasn’t played since.

But the Toffees will not be sweating over Mykolenko’s condition, the defender having missed Ukraine’s 1-0 win against Albania on Tuesday despite being expected to feature.

The 26-year-old pulled out at the last minute following a doctor’s visit, but his setback is not believed to be serious, which will come as great relief to Moyes.

Should he be forced to sit out for several weeks, though, Aznou will be able to judge once and for all whether his elusive chance will finally arrive. If it doesn’t, he will surely push to go.

That would be a real shame, especially after he showcased his ability for Morocco.

Moyes must give Aznou more chances

Aznou started for his nation’s Under-23s in mid-week and scored the first goal of the game in a 2-2 draw with Ivory Coast, a deserved reward for a performance bursting with intent.

Moyes has stubbornly stuck by his favourites, and Mykolenko is clearly among them, despite hardly tearing up trees. Indeed, reviews from pundits and supporters have been mixed.

Everton have been accused of squandering Aznou’s talent. At the very least, they are not able to accurately judge his potential because they aren’t playing him enough.

It would be foolish to allow him to leave permanently, but if they don’t give him opportunities to stake his claim, Moyes will effectively be signing the cheque himself.

Either way, the club need a resolution. He is tied down to a four-year deal worth around £25,000 a week, which over the course of the year adds up to approximately £1.3million.

It makes zero financial sense to keep a passenger on that wage.
