Everton Women: Scott Phelan doubts emerge in new manager latest at Goodison Park
Everton Women interim boss Scott Phelan may not get the role permanently amid a “difficult” season for the Toffees.
That is according to Megan Feringa of The Athletic, who exclusively told Goodison News that the 37-year-old may need to do more to get the job full-time.
Brian Sorensen was in charge of the Toffees for nearly four years before being sacked in February, having won just three out of 14 Women’s Super League games this season.
The Merseyside outfit had become a mid-table outfit in recent years, but never really looked like threatening to finish higher than that under the Dane.
Phelan then made the switch from Everton’s Under-18s to the Women’s team on a deal until the end of the season, and as it nears its conclusion, will Everton stick with the interim boss or look elsewhere?

Everton are still ‘vulnerable’
After securing an impressive 2-1 win at Tottenham on 15 March, Everton posted their fourth consecutive victory in the WSL.
That was also the third win in a row for Phelan, and a result that saw them rise to sixth in the table.
| Brian Sorensen’s spell at Everton | League finish |
| 2022-23 | Sixth |
| 2023-24 | Eighth |
| 2024-25 | Eighth |
| 2025-26 | Ninth (before being dismissed) |
Phelan admitted he wasn’t surprised by the turnaround at the time at Goodison Park.
Since then, Everton have suffered a gut-wrenching late defeat to Manchester United and a disappointing loss to local rivals Liverpool.
They now sit eighth in the table, 11 points above the relegation zone and one point off Brighton in sixth. So, how would Feringa sum up Everton’s season?
She told Goodison News: “Difficult. There’s no infrastructure around the team, and that vulnerability was on display this season.
“Phelan has done well, but not enough to drive the team to the next level permanently. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get the role.”
Tough end to the season for Everton
Everton have a big decision on their hands whether or not to appoint Phelan.
He doesn’t have much coaching experience at this level, and Everton may have just enjoyed the famed ‘new manager bump’ at the start of his tenure.
And to make matters worse, their fixture list for the rest of the season is not kind.
Next up, they host second-placed Chelsea on 26 April after the international break, before a tough test away at third-placed Arsenal.
They round off the season at home to WSL basement side Leicester, but will a win there be enough to keep Phelan in the job?
The manner of their performances in their final three games will likely be key, but at least survival has basically been checked off already.
