David Moyes needs to unlock faster Everton starts as Toffees struggle with early goals

David Moyes can turn Everton‘s form around if he can find a way for the Toffees to be faster out the blocks in their remaining Premier League games.

It’s been an up and down 2025-26 season at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and it’s now building towards a fascinating crescendo for Everton.

With no wins from their last four league outings, the Toffees’ European push has stalled over the last few weeks.

Moyes’ men came mightily close to scoring a huge victory over Manchester City last time out, but had to settle for a 3-3 draw, which is a brilliant result nine times out of 10 against the Cityzens, but Everton need wins.

So, with just three matches to play, Everton probably need to win at least two of them if they are to stand any chance of playing continental cup football in 2026-27.

What is Everton’s record for early goals like this season?

Scoring goals has not been Everton’s forte in 2025-26, with just 44 netted in the Premier League this season.

That’s one fewer than Tottenham have managed, and only two more than 18th-placed West Ham have bagged respectively.

However, the Toffees have found the net in each of their last five games, and their three scored against City last time out paints an encouraging picture that they will end the campaign in good form.

For whatever reason, some teams develop a penchant for scoring goals in certain periods of games, with certain sides renowned for their ability to score late goals, such as Manchester United for example.

On the contrary, some teams are known to start games fast more often than not, but it’s in this department that Everton have really struggled this season.

Indeed, as detailed via Transfermarkt, the Toffees have scored just 15 goals in the opening 45 minutes of Premier League games this season, which is a figure shared by Crystal Palace and Brighton respectively.

Only Fulham (14), Sunderland (12), Burnley (12) and Wolves (nine) respectively have scored fewer than Everton in this area, whilst all of Everton’s previous five league goals have been scored in the second half.

Everton need to stop putting themselves behind the eight ball

It goes without saying, but winning games of football is a very tough task to accomplish if you’re constantly in a position where you’re chasing a deficit.

Everton have found that out the hard way in recent weeks, with Moyes’ side unable to score the opening goal in any of their last four games.

The Toffees have picked up 10 points from losing positions this term, which isn’t a return to really write home about, and makes the need for getting ahead even more clear.

So, with a favourable final three against Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Tottenham respectively, Everton need to start coming out the blocks faster, and stop sides getting a foothold against them.
