David Moyes will feel vindicated on VAR thoughts as Everton biggest losers from decisions
David Moyes is not VAR’s biggest supporter, and the Everton boss has made that quite clear over the years.
Referees are humans, so they are always going to make mistakes. However, with another couple sets of eyes, with multiple replays at their disposable, those errors should ultimately dwindle.
Moyes will have felt that his side were on the wrong side of quite a few decisions, but many calls made are subjective in nature.
The use of VAR is often discussed throughout each Premier League season, with plenty of calls to completely get rid of it.
Now, after Everton’s season has finalised, the true impact of the technology on the Toffees’ season has emerged.

How much has VAR impacted Everton’s season?
According to the iPaper, they have constructed a new Premier League table based on there being no VAR decisions made.
It is also worth noting that these decisions and the change in the table are not based on “errors”. So simply put, but rather every VAR decision.
Caveats for Premier League table without VAR
Only possible by removing goals awarded after VAR incidents
Assumes the scoreline would have remained the same without those goals
Can’t account for red cards or other VAR-related incidents because their exact impact on the game is impossible to prove
Of course, it is not possible to deem the results of matches without VAR in the instances where the technology has intervened to dish out a red card.
However, the outcome of the final table will certainly be an interesting read for Toffees fans, and not in a good way.
Based on the research conducted, the Blues would have been the biggest movers in terms of going up the table.
Without VAR interventions, Everton would have finished in eighth place, securing themselves European football. Five places above their 13th position.
Additionally, the Toffees also ended the season without any VAR decisions going in their favour.
Interestingly, Sunderland were the biggest benefactors, appearing six places higher than they would without the interference of the technology.

What are David Moyes’ thoughts on VAR?
Moyes has often been outspoken about the issues he has with VAR, but the clearest sign of his feelings came four years ago.
Back in September 2022, after West Ham lost 2-1 to Chelsea, with Moyes instilled as Hammers boss at the time, the Scotsman did not mince his words over his thoughts on VAR.
Moyes stated that he had “lost faith in VAR” due to his Irons side having a late equaliser chopped off.
Now, the Everton chief is unlikely to have changed his thoughts, especially with Everton being negatively impacted by the technology more than any other side. Moyes may even feel vindicated in his thoughts on losing faith in VAR.
However, the Merseyside club had plenty of chances to finish in the European spots, and they cannot attach much blame to refereeing decisions.

Going seven games without a win to end the season was simply unacceptable for any European aspirations they may have had.
The L3 outfit will know that, despite Everton sending an official letter to the PGMOL amid that terrible run of form.
