Matty Cash: Aston Villa star gets Seamus Coleman ranking all wrong in right-back list
Matty Cash was tasked with blind ranking 10 right-backs, and the Aston Villa defender won’t be popular with Everton fans for where he put Seamus Coleman.
The veteran right-back is leaving Everton this summer, after spending 17 years as Toffee.
Joining from Sligo Rovers for a mere £60,000 all the way back in 2009, the Irishman ends his Everton stay holding the club’s all-time Premier League appearance record with 374 top-flight outings.
His impact and role on the pitch may have faded in his final years on Merseyside, but the legacy he leaves behind will make him an almost impossible player to replace regarding his leadership and understanding of what it means to play for Everton.
As such, Toffees supporters won’t be happy one bit with where Cash has put their 428-appearance hero in his right-back ranking list.

Where did Matty Cash rank Seamus Coleman in right-back list?
Everton were criticised for their Coleman send-off against Sunderland, with many feeling it was a lack of foresight from the club to hold his guard of honour and tribute after the full-time whistle.
Indeed, many of the home fans had left by the time Coleman took the field with his family after the game, with the Toffees losing 3-1 to the Black Cats.
| Everton’s top 5 PL appearance-makers | Total |
| Seamus Coleman | 374 |
| Tim Howard | 354 |
| Leon Osman | 352 |
| Leighton Baines | 348 |
| Jordan Pickford | 331 |
It wasn’t a fitting way for a player who has given as much to one football club as Coleman has to bow out in his final home game, and now he’s been handed some fresh disrespect by a fellow Premier League star.
Sitting down with Australian football channel Stan Sport, Aston Villa right-back Cash was tasked with blind ranking 10 Premier League right-backs.
The Villa defender started by putting Trent Alexander-Arnold second, Gary Neville in eighth, Branislav Ivanovic seventh, Kyle Walker third and Pablo Zabaleta ninth respectively.
Already having made some controversial selections there, Cash was then presented with Coleman, and Everton fans won’t be happy with him, as he put the Toffees great in 10th.
“He’s a legend because he’s played so many games, but I’m sorry, I’ve got to put him in 10,” Cash explained.
Completing his list, the Villa right-back then put Kieran Trippier in fifth, himself at six, Hector Bellerin fourth and Reece James first respectively.
Where should Cash have ranked Coleman?
Blind ranking players is tough, as the whole premise is based around not knowing which name is going to be thrown at you next.
However, I think everyone connected with Everton would agree that the Villa man has had a nightmare by putting Coleman 10th, so let’s sort that out.
In my opinion, you can make the case for James, Walker, Zabaleta, Ivanovic, Alexander-Arnold and Neville being better than Coleman, but it’s also important to remember that the Irishman dealt with significant injury problems throughout his Toffees career too.

But for my money, he’s certainly ahead of Bellerin, Trippier and Cash himself, so I think his floor in this list is seventh.
On the flip side, I think his ceiling is around five, as I don’t think he’s a better player than James, Walker or Alexander-Arnold.
However, I think you can make a strong case for Coleman being ahead of Neville and Ivanovic, so anywhere from seventh to fifth would be a fair place to put the Everton legend in this list, in my opinion.
Certainly not 10th, though.
