Nathan Patterson gets welcome Everton exit route in ironic transfer twist

Nathan Patterson could reportedly be offered a route out of Everton by Genoa as a replacement for a rising star.

The Scotland international has endured a miserable spell on Merseyside since arriving from Rangers in January 2022.

Patterson is no stranger to being linked with an exit from Hill Dickinson Stadium, though nothing has materialised in recent windows.

With just a year to run on his existing contract, however, it seems like this will finally be the window Patterson exits.

And a transfer update from abroad suggests he has already been lined up by Genoa.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy irony emerges in Nathan Patterson exit update

Patterson is not fancied by David Moyes for one reason or another, with the Scotsman preferring to play players out of position instead.

The 24-year-old started just three Premier League games in the 2025-26 season, with his other four outings coming via the substitutes’ bench.

He totalled just 240 minutes on the field. For context, he has played 152 minutes for Scotland across their past three games alone.

As per Wednesday’s edition of La Repubblica, Patterson has already been lined up by Genoa to replace in-demand full-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy.

Genoa’s financial situation means they will likely have to cash in this summer, but they like the look of Patterson as a like-for-like replacement.

The irony in all this is that Everton have been linked with Norton-Cuffy themselves in recent times. Indeed, it was reported in February they lead the race for the 22-year-old.

It may well be that if the stars align, Everton take Norton-Cuffy from Genoa and the Italian side sign Patterson for a lot cheaper as his replacement.

Everton could see Patterson’s value rise this month

Despite his lack of football at club level, Patterson is part of Scotland’s squad for their first World Cup campaign in nearly 30 years.

And as we know from previous editions of the tournament, one or two good showings from a player can completely change their career trajectory.

If Patterson plays for Scotland and catches the eye, he will instantly attract interest from other clubs – whether at home or abroad.

European clubs already appear to be aware of Patterson’s situation, and you would only imagine that would increase now he is into the final 12 months of his deal.

For both the player and Everton, it is imperative his future is sorted as soon as the World Cup is over, rather than letting this drag on any further.
