Ben Godfrey suffers hamstring injury in Everton vs Brentford

Ben Godfrey will be ‘missing for a period’ after the Everton defender suffered a hamstring injury in the 4-1 win over Brentford in the FA Cup.

The central defender was named in the starting lineup by Frank Lampard in his first game as manager but lasted just 14 minutes before being forced off.

He was replaced by Yerry Mina, who scored the opening goal of the game, and Lampard has now revealed that the defender will go for a scan on Monday but he expects to be without him for a while.

“It’s a hamstring injury which is to be assessed,” he said.

“We’ll have to let it settle for two days and then scan it, not good. He’ll be missing for a period of time depending on the severity of the injury, but it’s a hamstring.”

Blow

After finding himself out of the side for a while under Rafa Benitez and then being played at left-back, it was a positive for him to be selected from the start in central defence under the new boss.

He made a good start too, pressing high and looking comfortable on the ball so news that he’s now likely to miss a period of time is a big blow.

Everton

For Everton, it showed that they do have some depth in the squad though as Mina was able to step in and the performance levels didn’t drop.

Lampard knows he has experienced pros in the side he can trust and rely on so it’s not the end of the world but it will be a spanner in the works to suffer that issue so early on in his reign.

A scan will determine how long he is to miss, but hamstring injuries are usually around six to eight weeks out so fans shouldn’t expect to see Godfrey again any time soon.
