Chris Sutton makes Everton ‘groundhog day’ claim after last-gasp defeat v Wolves

Chris Sutton has suggested it is “groundhog day” for Everton and Frank Lampard after the Toffees suffered a last-gasp defeat to Wolves.

Rayan Aït-Nouri’s stoppage-time winner was enough to hear the boos ring around Goodison Park and the pressure rise further on Lampard and the board.

Sutton believes there are “deeper lying” issues at the club after interacting with an Everton fan on BBC 5 Live Sport on Monday evening (26 December).

The fan said: “Lampard is not to blame, he’s not good enough, the players are not to blame, they just aren’t good enough. None of them are to blame, it’s the higher echelons of the club.”

Sutton replied (07m 45s, 26 December): “I think you make a very valid point with their being deeper lying issues and it’s sort of groundhog day at Everton isn’t it.”

Bad times

These are really worrying times for Evertonians, with the possibility of relegation very much on the cards after a dire run of results under Lampard. The players have been devoid of ideas, and right now look like one of the poorest teams in the Premier League.

The pressure has only intensified with Wolves pulling closer to the Toffees, and already making an impressive statement in the transfer window. Matheus Cunha will be Wolves’ new focal point up front and the transfer is an example of how Everton are lagging behind.

Everton

Lampard desperately needs backing in the January window and it’s been suggested by The Daily Mail (25 December) that the club could be looking to let four players depart in order for the Toffees to add the attacking talent they need.

Failure to land a prolific and reliable forward will leave plenty of doubt over Everton’s Premier League status and the latest defeat to Wolves must be a wake-up call to the boardroom at Goodison Park.
