Goodison View: Everton can't let in-demand star leave this month

This January transfer window was shaping up to be one all about incomings at Everton, but outgoings remain a potential issue as well.

The Toffees aren’t in a position to be selling any of their top players, particularly given the below-par nature of their season to date.

Because of that, you wouldn’t have expected that many teams would be coming in for those in Everton blue, but in that you’d be mistaken.

Indeed, the Daily Mirror reported recently that the club’s Premier League rivals Newcastle United hold an interest in Blues defender Mason Holgate.

Now, the 23-year-old is one player Carlo Ancelotti seriously can’t afford to lose. The youngster has been a bedrock of this Toffees team this term and, despite their struggles, has performed pretty well overall.

Plus, the Italian is struggling with a lack of available centre backs as it is. At the moment there are only three senior centre halves at the club, and that includes Holgate.

So why on earth would Everton let him go? They likely wouldn’t, and that’s the right decision, because this young man could be a star.

This season he’s averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and three clearances per game, while he only gets dribbled past 0.5 times an outing as well.

Those are solid, solid numbers, while his passing is steadily improving as well. Certainly, he’s getting better all the time.

So no matter what Newcastle bid, because lord knows it won’t be too much, the Toffees must give them a resounding no.

In other Everton news, a former England international has been left buzzing about a reported Blues transfer pursuit.
