Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has tasked Marcel Brands with the mission to strengthen his defence this summer.

The Italian has seen some options such as Gabriel Magalhaes at Lille slip through his grasp, despite having a number of players available to him.

Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate struggled with injuries last season and Jarrad Branthwaite earned his debut at Goodison Park after the enforced break.

Another option Michael Keane has just earned a reward in Merseyside.

It was confirmed on Sunday that the 27-year-old had put pen-to-paper on a new five-year deal at the Toffees for his impressive season.

This follows in the same week that he was once again called up to the England international squad for the Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.

Keane is closing in on his 100th appearance for Everton in the Premier League and will earn that soon with his stay being extended until 2025.

Speaking about the new deal, Keane was full of praise for one figure at Goodison Park - the gaffer, Ancelotti.

"I am learning every day on the training pitch with the manager and all his staff," he said.

"They have been brilliant and really got across the way they want us to play. The manager is one of the best there has been."

Keane featured in every minute in the Premier League after the enforced break and will be looking to continue that form into next season too.
