'Could be a classic' - Michael Owen predicts winner in Everton clash v Liverpool

Michael Owen has backed Everton to lose their first game of the Premier League season against Liverpool.

The former Reds striker admitted that this weekend’s game is one of the most anticipated Merseyside derbies in many years at Goodison Park.

Owen has predicted that Liverpool will bounce back from their thrashing at Aston Villa in the perfect way, and win 2-1.

Writing in his BetVictor predictions blog, Owen claimed that this Merseyside derby could turn into a “classic.”

“This is the most anticipated Merseyside Derby in many a year,” he wrote.

“Who would’ve predicted out of the two sides that it would be Everton that go into the match with a 100% record? They have had some start, while Liverpool have had two weeks to lick their wounds after their 7-2 loss to Aston Villa.

“Will we see a reaction? I think so. This could be a classic, and I’m taking the Reds to edge it in a close-run match.”

Everton have made a massive signal of intent with their start to the Premier League season, but there is one way it could get better.

The Toffees fans would hail Carlo Ancelotti if he would be able to masterclass a win over their fierce rivals this weekend.

It would also banish the nightmares of last season, including the FA Cup defeat at Anfield against a very young Liverpool side.

Owen could be acting of his Liverpool connections, and although it’s a massive ask, there couldn’t be a better time for the Toffees to beat their rivals.
