View: England call-up should be on the cards for impressive Ben Godfrey

Ben Godfrey has been a fantastic addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton squad since joining from Norwich in the summer.

The defender, 23, has played an important role since debuting for the Toffees in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Goodison Park in mid-October.

Godfrey joined after being relegated last season with Norwich, where he won the Championship and wore the captain’s armband at the age of 21.

The Englishman has played 12 times this campaign in the Premier League, Everton have lost just twice when he’s been in the side.

Despite being a natural right footed centre half, Godfrey has found himself spending the last eight games he’s played in at left-back.

This has been due to the injury woes of Lucas Digne but since his return, Godfrey has still been played there. Clearly, he’s won the manager’s trust with his stellar performances.

It’s a relationship that appears to work both ways. In an interview with the Guardian in December, Godfrey said how much he’s enjoying playing under Ancelotti.

“It is unbelievable to be able to learn from this manager,” he said.

“I am so appreciative of the opportunity. He has worked with some world-class players and, the experiences he’s had, I can soak everything up. And I have been doing.

“He gives you confidence. He’s quite laid-back and to be honest he simplifies things for you. He makes the game as easy as possible for you and I’m really enjoying learning from him.”

England call up?

Godfrey’s form this campaign, whilst playing out of position, is enough to suggest he could force his way into Gareth Southgate’s England plans.

This season in the Premier League, he’s maintained an average of 85.1% passing accuracy and 5.86 interceptions per game [Wyscout].

He’s also completed a remarkable 69.2% successful dribbles and won possession 7.29 times per 90 minutes.

Godfrey has cemented his place in the Everton side this season, and his versatility also makes him a fantastic prospect.

In addition, he’s also been capped seven times at Under-21s level for his country. It seems as though a call up could be on the cards for the Blues ace.
