View: Pickford has another Everton shocker v Newcastle and must be dropped

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford came in for plenty of criticism following his error in midweek which allowed Leicester City to pull level and ultimately share the points.

There was talk that England’s number one may be dropped for Saturday’s game against Newcastle, just as he was for the reverse fixture a few months ago.

But Carlo Ancelotti stuck with his man and the decision looked to have been vindicated following Pickford’s brilliant fingertip save that stopped Callum Wilson opening the scoring from a first-half corner.

However, in the second half, Newcastle’s pressure became too much for the Blues and Wilson got his goal at the third attempt as he sent a frankly unsavable header into the Toffees net.

Pickford did little wrong here, most of the blame lies with the defenders who failed to pick up Wilson despite him going close from a corner in the first half.

Later in the game, Newcastle broke forward and Wilson was left one on one with Pickford.

Time for the Everton keeper to show that he still has what it takes and keep his side in the game during the last knockings of the match.

Of course, Wilson scored and it is easy to see why when you look at the replay.

Pickford gave Wilson about 65% of the goal to aim at and that’s being kind to the goalkeeper.

If the keeper takes a step to his right he would at least give the Newcastle forward a decision to make as he would be covering his far post but Pickford is instead moving left.

Wilson stuck the ball exactly where Pickford wasn’t and the game was wrapped up as another three-point haul alluded us.

Not to say that we would’ve gone up the other end and scored if Pickford makes a save here but just look at how easy he makes it for one of the best finishers in the Premier League.

If Ancelotti had some hope that Pickford was his man then that may have disappeared yesterday.

Don’t be surprised if Robin Olsen is in net next time out.
