Goodison View: Andre Gomes woefully short of gold standard set by Allan in Everton midfield
The return of Allan to the Everton midfield has been a welcome sight in recent weeks but the Blues will continue to suffer with Andre Gomes sat next to him.
Allan is Carlo Ancelotti’s snarling enforcer in the middle of the park and has been somewhat of a revelation since making the move from Napoli in the summer.
However he spent a good chunk of the season out injured after suffering a problem at Leicester City on December 16 and in his absence Gomes and Tom Davies were handed the chance to shine.
While Davies risen to the task Gomes has shrunk under the size of the job required of him and even with the Brazilian next to him against Chelsea he looked like a rabbit in headlights.
Gomes has started the last four games but is in danger of being dropped now.
The Portuguese international has shown flashes of promise but it has been an all too rare sight and his performance on Monday was nothing short of dreadful as Thomas Tuchel’s side rang rings around him.

According to Wyscout he was only successful with 57% of his actions at Stamford Bridge which is down on his 63% season average in the Premier League this season.
He also lost 57% of his duels – only Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alex Iwobi lost more and that was by a mere 1%.
Gomes lost 60% of his defensive duels while Allan lost less than three times that, coming out with an 82% success rate.
The difference in levels between the two are excruciating and Gomes must be dumped after this disastrous display.
That will not be easy with Carlo Ancelotti confirming Abdoulaye Doucoure is set for a spell on the sidelines [Liverpool Echo].
Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin were again absent from the Everton squad v Chelsea and cannot be relied upon meaning the only midfield options to partner Allan are Gomes and Davies.
It has to be Davies and if he is ruled out we would rather see Ben Godfrey handed the chance to showcase just how versatile he is.
With his defensive deficiencies and lack of invention going forward Gomes is a passenger and could end up costing the Blues a spot in Europe.
