Report: Everton open talks to sign £20m-rated Matheus Nunes
Everton have reportedly opened talks with Sporting CP as they eye a summer move for their midfielder Matheus Nunes.
According to The Daily Mail, the Portuguese side are open to parting ways with the player on loan this summer with an obligation to buy him for £20 million come the end of the season.
The player may not be working with Jorge Mendes but shares a good relationship with the man who also happens to be Nuno Espirito Santos’ agent – the reported favourite to take over at the helm.
The 22-year-old was linked with a move to Newcastle in the January window and they even made an approach to sign him, but he ended up staying put in Portugal.
Not too excited by this
Sure, Nunes has something about him and is doing relatively well at his age, but he hasn’t been proven outside Portugal, and offering £20 million for a player who may not strengthen our first team may be something the club opt against.
However, if we are to sign him, it will be interesting to see how Nuno, or whoever the new manager is, uses him.
The 22-year-old is an energetic midfielder that likes to surge forward and look for opportunities to score.
His goal scoring record of three in 31 games this past season may not paint the entire picture, but he is a player who has an eye for the goal.
However, given the positional luxuries our front three were given under Ancelotti, we needed our midfielders to focus on their primary job rather than getting too involved with the attack.
Nunes may eventually get to that, but from what he’s shown so far, if we were Marcel Brands, this would be a transfer we would veto and look for proven names rather than taking a punt on a hot prospect.
