Rafa Benitez remains the favourite to take charge of Everton this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Spaniard was said to be on the brink of taking over at Goodison Park, but shock reports linked yet another name this afternoon.

Calciomercato reported that Gennaro Gattuso is in the running for the vacant role after leaving Fiorentina this morning.

This managerial merry-go-round appears to be never-ending, and this twist was not even a surprise for anyone.

Benitez is still the favourite though and reportedly jumped into pole position on Wednesday evening.

Nuno Espirito Santo was the name on everyone's lips, but out of nowhere the former Liverpool man looked set to be announced.

That isn't the case, although it could happen closer to next week rather than over the weekend given the latest updates.

No twist?

It appears as though Gattuso is just an easy name to throw into the mix after he spectacularly left Fiorentina this morning.

Given it was only three weeks after he joined, the Italian icon doesn't fill us with positivity that he is the man to front this new project going into the new stadium.

Benitez may not be the favourite of the fans given his Liverpool links, but he has shown stability and delivered success nearly everywhere he has managed.

The Spaniard has won it all, and if he can deliver success to Goodison Park in the next couple of years, his former comments and links would be forgotten about.

As for Gattuso, we'll leave him for Spurs, who look as though they're the favourites to land him despite his minimal success in management.
