Kevin Campbell reacts to Arsenal links with Dominic Calvert-Lewin – Exclusive
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has warned that Everton have to be smart and quickly appoint a manager after Arsenal registered interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
According to The Telegraph, the Gunners admire the England international striker and are keeping tabs on him ahead of major changes to their attack this summer.
Campbell is not ruling out a deal being done between both side, but he reckons his former club need to get in a replacement for departed manager Carlo Ancelotti before talks can happen.
Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the ex-Everton star said: “He’s a fantastic player who has done really well, but one thing I would say is Everton have to be pretty smart in how they move, because Everton don’t even have a manager at the moment. Do they?
“So even if a deal will be done in some way, shape or form, the new manager might say, ‘well, I’d tell you what I would do, I’d sell him and go and get somebody I know or reckon could do the business’.
“They don’t have somebody who can do that. At the moment, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is vital to what Everton do.
“Unfortunately, I’m not the manager of Everton. The new man has got some decisions to make.”
Spot on
Everton have gone 23 days without a manager, and that has disrupted their initial summer transfer plans.
The new boss will have his ideas about incoming and outgoing deals, but we do not have an idea who that is going to be.
The non-international players kick off pre-season preparations on July 5 before others join them for the friendly games later in the month.
The Toffees begin their 2021-22 Premier League campaign on August 14 with a game against Southampton at Goodison Park, and hopefully, a new manager would be in place by then.
Whether he would be keen to lose DCL is really a huge doubt, though.
The 24-year-old ended last season with 25 goals in 49 appearances for both club and country, and Arsenal’s reported interest is well-founded.
Everton would not be looking to cash in on him, though, while Calvert-Lewin is not likely to be tempted to switch Goodison Park for the Emirates Stadium.
However, the new boss will have any final say, and we hope owner Farhad Moshiri can get this decision right.
In other Everton news, Moshiri must turn to Toffees fan favourite amid reported doubts about Benitez.
