Everton want to sign Burnley winger Dwight McNeil

Everton are targeting a deal to sign 21-year-old Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, according to Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile on Monday morning [19/07/21], Graves claims that Rafa Benitez is targeting a trio of wingers.

He said: “Everton are targeting Dwight McNeil of Burnley plus Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray. Benitez keen to bolster the clubs natural “wingers” in order to get more service to frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Also likely to target a backup striker.”

We weren’t too enthused when we saw the names of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend on Sunday evening, but McNeil is levels above both of them.

Gray could be a work in progress, someone whose full potential can finally be unlocked by Benitez, while Townsend will offer useful cover in the wing areas, and is someone the Blues boss knows well.

But McNeil is a real star in the making, and someone Blues fans will know all too well after his “sensational” [Burnley FC YouTube] strike at Goodison Park last season in a 2-1 win for the Clarets.

His goalscoring numbers are not off the charts – he has scored just 7 Premier League goals over the last three seasons – but he offers genuine pace and crossing ability in wide areas, and looks like he could be perfect for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

We’ve been crying out for a genuine winger for a long time, with the likes of Alex Iwobi and Bernard just not that sort of player, nor possess the quality to suceed.

However, McNeil would be a brilliant signing, and hopefully the ex-Manchester United academy graduate can be tempted to move to Merseyside.

Unless there are European sides in for him, we don’t see why he wouldn’t fancy the move, but as an exciting, young English winger, he may cost a fair amount to prise from the clutches of the Clarets.
