Andy Goldstein blown away by Everton signing of Andros Townsend
Andros Townsend completed his move to Everton on Tuesday evening and plenty of pundits have been offering their verdict on the deal.
One such individual was Andy Goldstein, who was speaking on talkSPORT [17:24, 20/07/21] as the official announcement emerged.
He said: “This is fantastic. Andros Townsend has just completed a two-year deal to Everton.
“To leave [Crystal] Palace and go to Everton, that’s unbelievable isn’t it?”
The 30-year-old has signed a two-year deal to tie him to the Blues until June 2023, per the official announcement on the club website, and he will link up with his former Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.
Caught everyone off guard
It was a move no one really saw coming until news started to filter through on Sunday evening.
Plenty of wingers had been linked with a move to the club before and after Benitez’s arrival, but Townsend wasn’t one we saw linked at all.
For him, getting a move from Palace to Everton at his age is a massive move, though it appears a rather strange signing on part of the Blues.
However, on paper, it makes a lot of sense.
Benitez and Townsend obviously formed a healthy relationship at Newcastle, and thus they will know what they are getting from each other over the next two years.
Furthermore, Townsend’s crossing abilities could be perfect for the aerial colossus that is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
According to WhoScored, the former England international had the best crossing accuracy in the Premier League last season, of those attempting at least 25 crosses, excluding corners [33%].
If he gets space on either wing with Calvert-Lewin in the penalty box, it could be a fearsome sight for opposition defenders.
This could be one of the shrewdest captures of the transfer window.
