Everton set to issue Tuesday transfer announcement on Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic
Everton are likely to announce the double arrival of Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic on Tuesday afternoon, according to Vinny O’Connor.
The Sky Sports journalist, reporting from Finch Farm, detailed the news on the television station, as relayed on their official Twitter accont.
He said: “In terms of that announcement, that official confirmation from Everton that they’ve been able to bring in Townsend and Begovic on free transfers, we’re expecting an announcement some time this afternoon, probably late afternoon I would imagine.”
Bargain double act
Townsend and Begovic are not exhilarating signings that are going to set pulses racing among Blues supporters, but they could be savvy signings by Rafa Benitez.
Neither are likely to be first-team regulars, so as free agents to fill the squad out, they appear to be no-risk signings.
Both count as home-grown players on account of Townsend being English and Begovic coming through the ranks at Portsmouth, and that frees space for further quality foreign imports that Benitez may want to bring in.
Their wealth of Premier League experience will be vital as we, hopefully, aim for some younger signings this summer.
That’s not to say they can’t still contribute on the pitch as well, mind.
34-year-old Begovic was voted into last season’s Championship Team of the Season for his brilliant displays in the Bournemouth goal, while 30-year-old Townsend played 34 times in the Premier League for Crystal Palace during the 2020/21 campaign, proving he still has plenty left in the tank and can be called upon throughout the season.
These two players won’t set off fireworks at Goodison, but they could be crucial squad members over the course of the season.
