Fabrizio Romano: Asmir Begovic has signed two-year Everton contract
Asmir Begovic has signed a contract at Everton and will join on a two-year deal, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Writing via his personal Twitter profile on Tuesday afternoon [20/07/21], Romano said: “Asmir Begovic has signed his contract as new Everton player, done deal confirmed. He’ll join until June 2023 as Everton goalkeeper.
“Next ones: Demarai Gray almost done and at final details, Andros Townsend completed.”
We expected the Begovic deal to be completed last weekend after the deal appeared to move at pace, but we have had to endure a few days wait.
That’s not something that has caused a huge issue, it’s not like there was a transfer tussle reported for the 34-year-old who shone at Bournemouth last season.
But it’s good to hear that there have been no late hitches and we can cross that area of the pitch off the priority list, with Jordan Pickford, Begovic and Joao Virginia likely to be the trio of goalkeepers for the 2021/22 campaign.
Begovic should provide healthy competition to Pickford as the 27-year-old looks to build upon a brilliant year so far that nearly culminated in European Championship success with England.
Robin Olsen provided a stern challenge last season, with ex-Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti handing him Premier League opportunities at times, even with Pickford fit and available.
That looked to have spurred Pickford on as he produced an accomplished end to his Blues season, even if the team was imploding around him.
Now he’ll have renewed competition in the form of Begovic, and it’s sure to be a test that he relishes.
