Everton in rush to complete paperwork for Demarai Gray, medical abroad
Bayer Leverkusen winger Demarai Gray has undergone a medical outside of the UK ahead of signing for Everton, according to Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor.
As shown in a clip on the Football Daily Twitter account on Tuesday, O’Connor was stood outside Finch Farm as he delivered an update on the Blues’ bid to sign 25-year-old Gray.
It is understood that Everton are set to pay £1.5million for the ex-Leicester attacker but are facing a mad rush to complete the paperwork so he can join up with the Merseyside club on their pre-season tour in Florida.
O’Connor said: “It’s edging ever close.
“He is due to have his medical [on Tuesday] – we understand that is going to happen abroad.
“The issue facing them at the minute is getting the necessary paperwork done so that he can fly out with the squad to Florida or at least join up with the squad in Florida.
“That’s getting done abroad, at the minute.
“As I say, Demarai Gray undergoing a medical with Everton and that will be ahead of a £1.5million [move] from Leverkusen.”
O’Connor added: “That deal appears to be nailed-on. He’s expected to join up with the squad as they fly out to Florida as well.”
Deal all but done
We can only assume that Gray is undergoing a medical overseas so that he can instantly fly out to Florida once he’s passed his checks. Otherwise, they would have surely jetted the Bayer Leverkusen winger into England beforehand.
Either way, it does seem as though Gray will join up with the Blues’ squad in the USA in the coming days.
Gray completed a medical as recently as January when he joined Bayer Leverkusen from Leicester City.
After starting well in the Bundesliga with a goal on his debut and assists in each of the two league games that followed, things went a bit quiet for the former Birmingham winger, who was once called up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
Gray’s not had the best few years but for £1.5million, it’s a risk-free deal that sees Rafa Benitez add some strength in depth to his attack and there’s always the chance the ex-England youth international finally does what everyone expected him to do as a youngster – light up English football.
