Benfica make enquiry to sign Andres Gomes this summer - report

Benfica have reportedly approached Everton with an enquiry about signing midfielder Andre Gomes this summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Champions League side are keen on signing the Portuguese as his future at Goodison Park remains uncertain.

Rafa Benitez is looking to sign midfielders in this transfer window and Gomes’ sale could free up space on the wage bill at the club and open the door for new signings.

Time to part ways

Gomes has been a decent player for us, but nothing extraordinary and certainly has not lived up to the expectations many Everton fans had of him when he signed from Barcelona in 2018 on loan and then permanently a year later.

The Portugal international certainly had some standout games – the most recent of them being against Leeds United in February.

Gomes ran the show that night and guided us to an impressive 2-1 victory over a hard-working and well-drilled Leeds outfit.

His performances even impressed Carlo Ancelotti, who in his post-match interview, waxed the player’s lyrical.

He said, via the club’s Twitter account, “In my opinion, tonight, the best player on the pitch was Andre Gomes.

“He played technically, physically, tactically a fantastic game. This is the real Andre Gomes. The real Andre Gomes that we need.”

By that, the Italian probably meant that we didn’t see too much of the real Andre Gomes in the past few seasons and he’s a classic hit-and-miss player – the kind of whom we should avoid signing in the future.

He’s a technical operator in the middle of the park, but has been left wanting for pace and physicality which are two important traits if one is to succeed in the Premier League.

An abrasive, backs-to-the-wall midfielder is one we need who can contribute at both ends of the pitch and offer much needed solidity in the middle of the park.
