Liverpool Echo: Inter Milan favourites to sign Denzel Dumfries
Inter Milan have emerged as favourites to sign PSV Eindhoven right-back Denzel Dumfries amid Everton interest, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Director of Football Marcel Brands and Rafa Benitez have discussed the possibility of bringing the Dutch right-back to Goodison Park this summer.
However, with growing interest in the 25-year-old’s services from Italy, they’re already actively eyeing alternatives in case they’re unable to sign him.
Another missed opportunity?
Dumfries was a target that certainly would have got the fans excited, especially after his performances for the Netherlands at the EUROs.
Right-back has been a position we desperately need to address this summer given Seamus Coleman’s age.
The 25-year-old fits the bill perfectly for us as he gives us much needed impetus going forward.
Having played as a wing-back as well for a huge portion of his career, Dumfries can fit into this role perfectly for us and bomb forward on the right with Lucas Digne doing the same on the left.
He’s also a good crosser of the ball, which would benefit Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is prolific at winning aerial duels and has often been deployed as a target man for us.
Brands is understood to be a fan of the player and it’s important that he steps up his pursuit and ensures we sign him ahead of Inter.
The Italian club’s financial struggles have been well documented, and we should be taking advantage of it and making Dumfries one of our marquee signings this summer.
So far, we’ve completed relatively frugal acquisitions since Benitez’s arrival, but Dumfries is someone we have to loosen the purse strings for.
