Everton keen on Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa this summer

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Brazilian attacker Gabriel Barbosa this summer.

According to The Daily Mirror, the 24-year-old has appeared on Everton’s radar and a fee in the region of £40million would be enough to tempt Flamengo to part ways with their prized asset.

West Ham are also keen on getting the player to the London Stadium as they’re in the hunt for a striker since Sebastien Haller’s departure in January.

Last season, Gabigol enjoyed a good goal-scoring run and ended the campaign with 14 goals and two assists in 25 appearances.

Not at that price

The former Inter Milan striker was considered a flop after his time in Europe was unsuccessful but he’s rediscovered his goal-scoring touch in his homeland Brazil – bagging 88 goals in 119 games for Flamengo.

Brazil legend Zico, who is a keen follower of the Brasileirao, has heaped the highest of praises on the 24-year-old and has tipped him for greatness at Flamengo.

In an interview with O Dia, Zico said, “I think Gabigol has everything to be the greatest striker in Flamengo’s history. He’s getting there.

“His performance keeps getting better, consolidating himself as one of the greats. He’s already made history. He is young and he can do much more and I hope he can.”

That’s high praise for someone widely regarded as one of the best strikers of his generation.

Gabigol has shown that he’s got the right mentality to bounce back from adversity and rediscover his potential to become a lethal striker in the game.

While we would love to have him and due to his versatility, Rafa Benitez could deploy him anywhere on the pitch, his price tag is something that would instantly put off the club.

We’re not in desperate need of a striker like West Ham are so shelling out that kind of money for a reserve position is not frugal and one that would be vetoed by the higher-ups at the club.

Should he come closer to the £20million mark then there’s a good chance that Marcel Brands would start enquiring and maybe test the waters with an offer.
