Kevin Campbell reacts to James Rodriguez-Everton updates

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Everton cannot afford to be carrying James Rodriguez next season.

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol has reported this week that the Colombian is unsettled at Goodison Park.

Campbell believes Rafa Benitez will now be weighing up the situation and that an exit is likely for Rodriguez.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Campbell said, “I just think Rafa Benitez has weighed the situation up.

“He came to support Carlo Ancelotti, but Benitez knows that you can’t carry people in the Premier League and is looking at that.

“For what he gives us going forward, he doesn’t when we don’t have the ball, so it’s the manager’s decision to make.

“Some teams can get away with carrying a player, I don’t think Everton can.”

Time to go.

Campbell is spot on, we can’t afford to carry anyone.

Rodriguez will give you nothing defensively, and only completed 90 minutes on eight separate occasions last season.

Defensively, we need more at times and when you compare the playmaker to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, they are prepared to do the hard yards for the team.

Getting rid of those mega wages will be beneficial for everyone at the club, and should allow us to seal a couple of deals this month.

Ideally, this would have been completed before we went out to America and gave him minutes, but Rodriguez proved there he wasn’t fit enough.

It’s time to cut ties, we don’t need any passengers.
