Ben Thornley savages Asmir Begovic in Everton defeat against Man United

Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic was criticised by former Premier League winger Ben Thornley in the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Jordan Pickford started the game and conceded three first-half goals, making a huge mistake for Mason Greenwood’s opening strike.

However, Begovic, who came on to replace him, was poorly-positioned for Diogo Dalot’s headed goal in stoppage time.

Discussing the goal on commentary for MUTV, Thornley said, “Asmir Begovic was in no man’s land.

“You expect a goalkeeper of his calibre to do better there. Unacceptable.”

Not again

We’ve seen plenty of goalkeeping howlers in the past few years and it seemed like they were behind us with Pickford’s rise in form and impressive performances at the EUROs, but unfortunately, we’ve seen two in today’s game.

For Dalot’s header, Begovic was so slow to react that he put himself in an impossible situation to make the save.

Usually for corners, keepers tend to stay put on their line, but the Bosnian was at least a few inches off it and almost stood in the box like he was a defender.

Dalot just tried his luck and it typically would’ve been a routine save for a keeper who’s in the right position and had eyes on the ball from start to end, but Begovic just made an absolute mess of the situation.

We’re hoping that the goalkeeping coaches work doubly as hard with the two in the coming weeks as we don’t want another season where our shot stoppers are the ones costing us needless points.
