Some Everton fans hurl derogatory Rafa Benitez chant in 4-0 loss to Manchester United

Some Everton fans were heard hurling derogatory Rafa Benitez chants in the 4-0 loss to Manchester United, according to Samuel Luckhurst.

The Manchester Evening News journalist was in attendance at Old Trafford as the Red Devils marched to a comfortable win over the Toffees.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions being eased, away fans were allowed and the stadium hosted over 50,000 people for this friendly.

Via his personal Twitter account, Luckhurst said, “A minority of Everton fans singing ‘fat Spanish waiter’ at Benitez.”

Unacceptable

We get that a lot of fans weren’t happy with Benitez’s appointment and in a number of ways made their displeasure clear before the club made an official announcement.

Eventually, their protests fell on deaf ears and the hierarchy decided to go ahead with the Spaniard anyway. Now that he’s in the job, we cannot turn on him before the season even begins.

Agreed, the performance at Old Trafford was poor, but we missed key first-team players and this was only a pre-season encounter with the manager trying out a few different things.

We’ve still got few more names to join the squad, including new Olympic champions Richarlison, and also new signings that will strengthen our playing eleven are expected to walk through the door.

Name-calling such as this is childish and to be honest, pretty embarrassing. Thankfully, it was only a minority of our fanbase doing that because it would’ve been a whole lot worse if there were more fans joining in to slam the manager.
