Michael Owen blown away by Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty against Brighton

Michael Owen was impressed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty for Everton in their 2-0 win against Brighton.

The England international has scored in all three games this season and was once again among the goals when the Toffees ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against the Seagulls.

Calvert-Lewin calmly slotted home the penalty and Owen was impressed by his technique, comparing it to the one he scored against Leeds United.

Speaking on the Premier League Productions’ post-match show, Owen said, “That was a fantastic penalty by Calvert-Lewin. Much like the penalty against Leeds, he did really well there.”

Great start

Calvert-Lewin was one of Everton’s best players last season and he’s started this campaign in fine form.

He’s given new manager Rafa Benitez a striker that he can rely on, something he lacked at Newcastle.

The 24-year-old has grown from strength to strength over the last 12 months and has become a regular selection in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Even Richarlison has got better playing around him and the two seem to have formed a seamless understanding in the final third.

Despite starting this season with a minor injury, he’s carried on from where he left off in May and he should take the next few weeks easily and come back strong for the September fixtures.

That said, knowing Calvert-Lewin, he would want to play every game and it’s important that he consults with the club physios before exerting himself a great deal.
