Andros Townsend wowed by Ben Godfrey's performances in training
Andros Townsend has been blown away by the performances of fellow Everton teammate Ben Godfrey since he arrived in the summer.
The 30-year-old attacking midfielder joined the Toffees on a free after his Crystal Palace deal expired at the end of last season, and watching the 23-year-old defender in training has impressed him.
When asked which one of his new teammates had impressed him most at Finch Farm, Townsend did not hesitate to shower praise on Godfrey.
He told Sportsmail: “Obviously I played against him last season and he’s got massive potential, but seeing him on a day-to-day basis, he really is the real deal.
“Again, with a manager like Rafa who will work hard to improve him, he can really go to the very top.
“I know he was involved in the England setup in the summer and didn’t quite make the squad, but he’s a player who’s definitely going to go right to the very top sooner rather than later – and by very top I mean playing in major tournaments for England.”
Godfrey made Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional list for the European Championship in the summer but was not part of the final 26-man squad.
Nevertheless, his quality and versatility were good enough to have earned him a spot in the team of the England manager.
The former Norwich City man impressed in his debut season at Goodison Park under Carlo Ancelotti, and the national team selectors were watching.
Coronavirus complications have limited the playing opportunities of the defender this term, but he remains a key player who is expected to play a huge role under manager Rafa Benitez this term.
Townsend has seen a lot of top players during his long career, and Godfrey must have stood out in training to have caught his eyes.
The youngster will be eyeing a place in Southgate’s World Cup squad next summer, and he is under the tutelage of a manager who can help him get better and become an England international.
Godfrey has the potential to become one of the best players in his position in the Premier League, and he is at the right place to blossom.
