Gary Lineker and Chris Sutton blown away by Andros Townsend in Everton win
Gary Lineker and Chris Sutton were blown away by Andros Townsend’s first Everton goal on Monday night in the 3-1 win over Burnley at Goodison Park.
Rafa Benitez’s new signings were on fire as the Blues went fourth in the Premier League and level on 10 points with first-placed Manchester United.
Demarai Gray grabbed his third goal in as many games while Townsend, 30, scored and assisted.
Lineker was staggered by the quality of Townsend’s goal.
Writing via his personal Twitter account, the ex-Everton striker said: ” He doesn’t score that many does Andros Townsend but when he does they’re always special. What a goal.”
Sutton was just as impressed.
“What a stunning goal from Andros Townsend,” he said on Twitter on Monday night.
Townsend has a bit of a nack for scoring spectacular goals and that one against Everton was exactly that.
Not only did it set the Blues on course for victory as it put us ahead in the second half but it was also an absolute screamer from distance.
And we all love a good left-footed strike, don’t we?
You can really see why Benitez opted to sign Benitez and Gray in the summer transfer window with both attackers making a huge difference to the Blues attack.
Gray, especially, has been on fire and is one of the most in-form players in the Premier League as it stands with three goals in three.
Townsend may not have started as quickly as Gray but it’s clear that the former Newcastle and Crystal Palace wide-man is an absolute asset and a massive improvement on what Benitez already had in his position.
Let’s see how this run of form goes in the coming weeks.
It was superb to see us winning a game without the talismanic Dominic Calvert-Lewin but Burnley have looked poor so far this season.
Tougher tests lie ahead for us and Aston Villa, who we played at Villa Park this weekend, will be a challenge.
In other Everton news, Townsend was thrilled with one of his team-mates against Burnley.
