Alan Shearer blown away by Andros Townsend's performance against Burnley
Everton grabbed their third Premier League victory of the new season in style on Monday night, securing a 3-1 win over Burnley after going behind.
Summer signing Andros Townsend put the hosts ahead with a worldie a few minutes after Michael Keane drew them level.
The 30-year-old attacking midfielder was provider just moments before his goal with a deft cross that the centre-back equalised from, and he also played a key role with the pre-assist as Demarai Gray put the game to bed with the Toffees’ third goal of the night.
Premier League legend Alan Shearer was blown away by the performance of the Everton man, including him in the official Team of the Week.
The former striker wrote in his column while selecting his Matchweek 4 best XI: “A brilliant display.
“Produced an assist for the equaliser and then netted a stunning strike from distance.”
Townsend joined the Blues for free after his Crystal Palace contract expired in the summer, and he has been an inspired addition to Rafa Benitez’s side.
The veteran winger has two league assists and a goal to his name in the four opening games, and he also bagged a goal in the 2-1 League Cup win over Huddersfield Town in August.
He is very much keen to prove that he still has a lot to offer in the top-flight after the Eagles let him go, and signing him is proving to be a masterstroke.
Benitez wants his wingers delivering perfect crosses into the box for his strikers, and he has gotten one of the best men in the business for the job.
Townsend does not score much, but most of his goals are absolute beauties, and the Goodison Park crowd will hope to see more of them going forward.
He will be looking to outdo his return of six goals and four assists from the 2018-19 top-flight season – his highest goal involvement in a single campaign – and that could be on the cards this term.
In other Everton news, Andros Townsend has tipped one Toffees player to reach the very top.
