Gary Lineker impressed with the tactical genius of Rafa Benitez against Burnley

Everton secured their fourth Premier League win of the new campaign at the expense of Burnley on Monday night at Goodison Park.

The Toffees had to come from a goal down to secure a valuable 3-1 win, scoring all their goals within six minutes after turning up the heat.

BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker was blown away by the tactical genius Rafa Benitez displayed during the game, taking to his personal Twitter account to react.

He said: “He is a tactically smart cookie is Rafa Benitez.”

Smart

Everton conceded in the 53rd minute and Benitez decided to take off Ben Godfrey for Andre Gomes.

His side equalised just seven minutes later while the Portuguese was still on the touchline, but Michael Keane’s goal changed nothing as the Spaniard stuck to his plans.

The Goodison Park outfit started the game with three centre-backs, a tactic he often loves to deploy against direct teams who play with two strikers up front.

When it failed to work after a goalless first-half, Benitez wasted no time switching things up, and it yielded the desired impact almost immediately, with Everton racing into a two-goal lead afterwards.

Reverting to a 4-3-3 formation did the trick, and despite spending just £1.7million in the summer, it was a moment of tactical brilliance that proved crucial in the end.

The Toffees have one of the best managerial minds in the game, and while they will not always win, fans can expect him to give his best in the technical area every game.
