Kevin Campbell: Ben Godfrey can play centre-back if Yerry Mina misses Everton v West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has backed Ben Godfrey to play at centre-back for Everton when they take on West Ham on Sunday.

Yerry Mina seems unlikely to be able to play in the Goodison Park showdown due to his international commitments to Colombia.

Colombia play against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier at 10pm (UK time) on Thursday night, meaning that the 27-year-old centre-back could face a race against the clock to be back on Merseyside in time for the West Ham match.

While he is likely to be back in England by Saturday, the chances of him being well-rested and well-prepared to play the Hammers are low.

Doubts surround Seamus Coleman’s fitness ahead of playing West Ham on Sunday afternoon but if he’s available, Campbell wants to see the Irish right-back come back into the side and Godfrey move into the middle to replace Mina.

Speaking to Goodison News, Campbell said: “Godfrey could move into the defence, especially to deal with the likes of Michail Antonio, and Seamus Coleman could come back to right-back.

The aerial side isn’t that big a threat while the ball is in play as it would be at set-pieces. But you need someone with strength and pace to deal with Antonio.

Maybe that could be a good move.”

Mina has started Everton’s last four Premier League games, helping the Toffees beat Norwich and Burnley while also performing in the 1-1 draw versus Manchester United before the international break.

The former Barcelona defender has played 90 minutes in both of Colombia’s World Cup qualifiers in this international break, playing major roles in clean sheets against Uruguay and Brazil.

If he has another 90 minutes to play on Thursday, the chances of him getting into the squad to play West Ham have to be really low.

In other Everton news, a manager has sanctioned a move for one of his players to lure this Blues ace away.
