Paul Scholes: Newcastle job ideal for Rafa Benitez

Everton boss Rafa Benitez would be an ideal fit for Newcastle after their takeover earlier this month, claims Paul Scholes.

In the recent episode of the Overlap, which was held in the format of a live debate for the Newcastle fans, Scholes a BT Sport pundit, was quizzed about his thoughts on who would replace Steve Bruce at the helm.

The name of Benitez was suggested by someone in the crowd, and Scholes backs him to do well there.

He responded, “Benitez, he would be ideal, wouldn’t he?”

No chance

According to The Telegraph, the new owners had Benitez’s name at the top of their wishlist in order to replace Bruce.

The Spaniard was adored by the fans despite not doing too much better than Bruce in terms of results.

However, the constraints he worked under were far more stringent and he managed to do a great job getting his side back up to the Premier League.

That being said, he’s not in the habit of breaking contracts and his recent comments suggest that he’s very happy at Goodison Park.

Via the Liverpool Echo’s Phil Kirkbride, he said, “I have a lot of friends and they were asking me the same question. From day one, I was talking to the board here and they have nothing to worry about.”

This certainly does not sound like someone who’s mulling over an exit from the club.

He seems committed to the project at Goodison Park and seems to be keen on repaying the faith the board showed in him while bringing him through the door this summer.
