Everton vote against having a World Cup every two years

Everton, along with the other 19 Premier League clubs, have voted against FIFA’s proposal of having a biennial World Cup, per The Athletic.

FIFA are currently looking at the option of having the tournament taking place every four years, which has been widely criticised.

The Premier League clubs have unanimously voiced their disapproval towards it with the league releasing a statement.

It read, “All 20 Premier League clubs have discussed the post-2024 International Match Calendar reform process and are unanimously opposed to FIFA’s proposal for biennial men’s World Cups, along with any plans involving significantly extended international windows.

“Clubs raised concerns about the negative impacts FIFA’s current proposals would have on player welfare, the fan experience, pre-season preparations and the quality of competitions.”

Good move

From a fan’s perspective, what makes the World Cup such a unique experience is the fact that it takes place twice in a decade.

Should it take place every other year, the hype dies down, and rightly so.

There are international tournaments like the EUROs and Copa America to satisfy the cravings of watching these competitions in the summer.

It is also going to be excruciating for the players and the time of the year they usually get off will go into training for the tournament.

There’s already a serious concern of burnout due to fixture congestion and this will make things worse.

It’s good to see that Everton sided with all the other clubs and hopefully if a league like the English top flight can oppose it, there are slim chances of it going ahead.
