Simon Jordans slams 'ridiculous' Everton star Jordan Pickford ahead of Liverpool clash

Simon Jordan has revisited last year’s Jordan Pickford challenge on Virgil van Dijk ahead of the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool tonight.

The Wednesday (1 December) clash takes place at Goodison Park with the local rivals in contrasting form.

Everton are winless in their last seven games while Liverpool have won 4-0 in each of their last two Premier League outings [v Arsenal and Southampton].

The last Merseyside derby at Goodison (October 2020) saw Reds star van Dijk suffer a season-ending injury after clashing with Pickford during the first-half of a 2-2 draw.

Speaking on talkSPORT (1 December) in the build-up to tonight’s clash, Jordan took aim at Pickford for last year’s alleged misdemeanours.

“Pickford’s challenge last year was ridiculous on Virgil van Dijk, we all know it was extremely unnecessary and it was rash and it was irresponsible,” Jordan said.

“I’m looking at the Everton side and the way they rolled over at Watford, Liverpool haven’t got much to worry about if they’re going to turn up like that.”

Move on

Pickford’s challenge on van Dijk has been scrutinised to the high heavens already.

It was the focus of national, and even international, attention in the following weeks and months after.

Naturally, it has been mentioned again recently as reporters bid to get reactions from Jurgen Klopp, van Dijk and Pickford.

But it doesn’t seem very worthwhile for Jordan to rear up the subject again and tear into Pickford.

Was the challenge reckless? Probably. Did Pickford mean to cause injury to his opponent? Almost certainly not.

All it does it add to what is already likely to be a fierce Merseyside derby as Everton look to arrest their recent slump in form.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their recent momentum that has been built following the international break, a run that has seen them record three successive victories in a row without conceding.

In other Everton news, the Blues were in a European transfer mission on Saturday as this Spanish sensation starred with a brace.
