Paul Merson slams Farhad Moshiri for making Rafa Benitez Everton manager
Paul Merson has torn into Farhad Moshiri for making a former Liverpool manager in Rafa Benitez the Everton boss this summer.
He believes that Bill Kenwright would never have handed the reins to the Spaniard, given his association with their local rivals.
After a good start, Benitez faces a very serious prospect of being sacked with a dismal last two months that has seen the club fall into a relegation battle.
In his Daily Star column, Merson wrote, “I don’t think Farhard Moshiri understands football. If you understand football, you can’t give that job to an ex-Red. You just can’t.
“I find it mind-blowing. Bill Kenwright has his critics but if that had been his decision to make he would never have given the job to Benitez.
“You have to look at the decision-makers at the club. Do they know what they’re doing? The owner barely even shows up at games!
“Look at their next few games. Arsenal and Leicester at home. Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Burnley away. They could be in a relegation battle by Christmas.”
To blame this entirely on Benitez is a tad unfair as he wasn’t backed in the summer by the board.
Bar Demarai Gray, all the other players that walked through the door joined on free transfers.
Of them, only a few have actually added value to this side and the Toffees have gone from looking like one of the best of the rest, to a side that deserves to be in a relegation battle.
Benitez does need to do more with this current crop of players and it remains to be seen how long Moshiri lets this mess carry on.
Marcel Brands is himself not exempt from this and deserves just as much blame if not more than Moshiri and Benitez.
