2/10 for Seamus Coleman on ‘torrid afternoon’ – Everton player ratings v Crystal Palace

Everton suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Following the 2-1 win over Arsenal earlier in the week (6 December), hopes were high for another good performance today.

The Toffees went behind just before halftime as Conor Gallagher found the net, before James Tomkins doubled the hosts’ lead after the break.

Substitute Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back – his first in an Everton shirt – but Gallagher wrapped up the win for Palace with an excellent strike in stoppage time.

Here’s how Goodison News rated the Everton players at Selhurst Park:

Jordan Pickford 6

Made a couple of important saves, but wasn’t majorly tested. Has every right to be annoyed at the defence in front of him for the way the goals were conceded.

Seamus Coleman 2

Horrid afternoon. It was his poor clearance that led to Palace’s first goal and it was deja vu in second half stoppage time when he gave it away for Gallagher to net again.

Mason Holgate 3

Not a long-term solution in defence. He left too much space in behind and struggled against Palace’s attacking pace.

Michael Keane 4

Decent defending but he needs to be braver with his passes forward. Lumps it upfield far too often.

Ben Godfrey 6

A decent performance only tarnished by the fact he lost Tomkins for Palace’s second goal. He got forward well and was reasonably solid, which meant Everton didn’t miss Digne.

Everton

Abdoulaye Doucoure 5

Couldn’t get into the game in the first half as the deep lying role does not suit him. Improved after the break when he had more freedom to get forward.

Fabian Delph 3

Deserved to come back into the starting lineup, but didn’t take his chance. Looked off the pace and did not provide much cover in the holding role. Lost Gallagher for the first goal.

Andros Townsend 3

Looks a shadow of the player he was earlier in the season. Anonymous for most of the game and it was a surprise to see him last the full 90.

Andre Gomes 4

Was bright in patches and looked to get Everton forward in the first half. Faded after the break and too weak for Palace’s third goal.

Everton

Demarai Gray 6

Everton’s brightest attacking spark again and he had a couple of decent efforts on goal. Did give the ball away for Palace’s first goal though.

Richarlison 3

Very isolated upfront by himself, partly due to a lack of service. Clearly doesn’t suit the lone frontman role. Didn’t look happy when he was subbed off, but can’t have many complaints.

Substitutes

Anthony Gordon 6

Salomon Rondon 7
