Keith Hackett: Everton have right to be aggrieved by Andy Madeley decision v Crystal Palace
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...
Keith Hackett has taken aim at Andy Madeley for his officiating in the 3-1 defeat for Everton against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
James Tomkins scored the second at Selhurst Park, but officials missed a foul in the build-up, which was allowed to slide.
Hackett insisted that Madeley was far too loose in his management of the game as he didn’t understand the two teams.

“There was a foul,” he told Goodison News. “The referee appeared to miss it. I do think if you’re looking at the game cleanly and honestly, referees need a bit of luck.
“I thought, Andy Madeley is a new referee – I thought his approach was too loose and relaxed in this game, I don’t think he fully understood the two teams he was officiating.
“It should have been punished, but it was ignored. I think Everton have a right to be aggrieved.”

No surprise.
If Hackett, who has been out of the game for some time now can recognise that Madeley didn’t understand the magnitude of this type of game, surely the PGMOL can.
Before Tomkins scored, it was a clear foul, everyone agrees that – so why can’t the officials and then the VAR not see that?
The Toffees’ form is horrid right now, so this is no excuse, but sometimes you need a major decision to go your way to sway the tide of the clash.
That never came, and instead, it gave Palace that comfort blanket to double their lead and eventually take home the three points.
