Benteke slammed by ex-referee for ‘reckless’ challenge that injured Everton right-back Coleman
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Everton...
Keith Hackett has slammed Christian Benteke after he noticed the Crystal Palace striker stamp on Seamus Coleman’s foot as Everton lost at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
Benteke wasn’t cautioned for the challenge, which also wasn’t analysed by Sky Sports or Match of the Day.
According to Sky Sports journalist Ben Grounds, Coleman was injured by Benteke’s challenge.
Ex-Premier League referee Hackett has sent a warning to Andy Madley, who officiated the match on Sunday after he missed the incident.
Speaking to Goodison News, Hackett said: “Later on in the game, there was that Benteke challenge.
“Benteke came in, he hovered with his right foot, holding it like a cocked arrow, and then stamped or came into contact with his opponent’s foot.
“It was reckless, it was a yellow card challenge and I think that he’s got a lot going for him this referee, his movement is pretty good, so I don’t question his mobility.

“But get real. You’re in the real world and you’ve got to be making the big decisions.”
Coleman’s now an injury doubt for Everton ahead of their upcoming Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.
On the Toffees’ official website, they confirm that the right-back has “suffered bone bruising and soft tissue damage” and will be assessed ahead of the trip to Chelsea.
