Everton unlikely to recall Niels Nkounkou from his loan spell at Standard Liege

Everton are reportedly unlikely to recall left-back Niels Nkounkou who left for Belgian side Standard Liege on loan in the summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, despite the Toffees having a lack of options in that position, they are not considering bringing the 21-year-old back in January, who has been a regular starter this season.

This is down to the fact that they’re believed to be closing in on a move to sign Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Hinges on Digne’s future?

This could all change if Lucas Digne does leave in January, which is an option, as things stand.

His fallout with Rafa Benitez appears to have gotten to a level where they’re probably not seeing eye to eye behind the scenes.

Mykolenko’s arrival could see Digne drop to the bench and instead of waiting for his moment, he may look for an exit in January.

There have been plenty of clubs linked with the Frenchman and the Toffees may look to cash in.

If they do, Mykolenko will be the only left-back and it will be better to have Nkounkou as his backup.

Whether or not Benitez pushes for this remains to be seen, but it is important to have at least two players in every position.

Ben Godfrey has done well there, but it’s not his preferred position and he will get exposed there eventually.
