Kevin Campbell: Everton loan exit could suit Jean-Phillipe Gbamin

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Kevin Campbell has insisted that Everton midfielder Jean-Phillipe Gbamin leaving on loan this month could be a smart move.

The ex-Toffees talisman refused to label the big-money signing as a flop with injuries ruining his start to life at Goodison Park.

Fortunes haven’t changed for Gbamin under Rafa Benitez, who has been given cash to spend already this month by Farhad Moshiri.

The Liverpool Echo reported recently that the Ivorian could be sent out on loan this month, something Campbell appeared to agree with.

“It’s not really a flop when a player is injured,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“There is nothing you can do about that. He’s had a terrible time with injuries, so I just think that maybe a change of scenery for him may just work out.

“He hasn’t played enough football to be called a flop, so many injuries so him going somewhere else and getting some game time will suit him and get him off the wage bill.”

Not a flop?

Should Gbamin not be able to string together a handful of appearances together between now and the end of the season, opinions may change.

Injuries or not, big money was spent to bring the midfielder to Merseyside from Mainz, and it hasn’t paid off at all years later.

Campbell is defending Gbamin strongly, but at some stage, you need to do the business on the pitch to back that up.

Benitez will be demanding that every one of his players steps up to turn form around at Goodison Park, and Gbamin is exactly one of those.
