Everton expected to table new and improved bid for Newcastle United ace Sean Longstaff

Everton are expected to table a new and improved bid for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to the Sunday Express.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on Sunday [9 January, page 65] that the Blues have already had one bid for the 24-year-old turned down by Newcastle, with Rafa Benitez “eager” to sign a player he handed his debut to in 2018.

It is understood that while Longstaff wants to “fight for his place” at St James’ Park, his future is uncertain as he’s reluctant to sign a new contract and that means Newcastle may opt to cash in on him before 31 January when the transfer window closes.

Confusing

It’s hard to work out what Longstaff wants.

The Sunday Express’ report says that he wants to fight for his place at Newcastle but then adds that he’s reluctant to sign a new deal.

That doesn’t make any sense because surely if he wants to work his way back into Eddie Howe’s plans, he’ll commit to a new contract.

You can’t blame Howe for not playing Longstaff when he’s got all the money in the world to sign an improvement this month. And, you have to think, what’s the point in playing a player if you know he’s just going to up and leave in the summer when his contract expires?

Longstaff is best off quitting Newcastle this month because let’s face it, there are a lot of better central midfielders out there who are better rated than the Tyneside-born player.

If we’re honest, signing Longstaff doesn’t excite us.

He’s impressed in the past at Newcastle. In February 2019, Alan Shearer hailed a “faultless” performance against Huddersfield in the Premier League.

In the same month, Benitez was quoted by the Guardian as comparing Longstaff to Michael Carrick while Matt Ritchie said “He’s a top player and a fantastic lad.”

But it’s hard to find any praise for Longstaff recently with the midfielder now seemingly out of favour at St James’ Park and most likely on his way out.

In other Everton news, a major bid has been tabled for this Toffees star.
