Everton want to keep Mason Holgate, already rejected offer - report
Everton want to keep Mason Holgate this month and have already knocked back a loan bid from Trabzonspor according to Sky Sports.
Holgate had found himself down the pecking order under Rafael Benitez before being installed as the left-back after the manager’s fall-out with Lucas Digne.
Everton have already signed Nathan Patterson from Rangers and Vitaly Mykolenko from Dinamo Kyiv this month for the full-back positions and that threw Holgate’s future at the club up in the air.
But according to Sky Sports, the Toffees have no intention of letting the 25-year-old leave this month and have already ‘knocked back’ a loan bid from Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.
According to journalist Ben Islington, they have received inquiries from Newcastle, Nice and Monaco this month too.
Everton have been struggling massively this season and currently sit in 15th place with just one win in their last 12 Premier League games.
They scraped through to the fourth round of the FA Cup thanks to an extra-time win over Championship outfit Hull, so Benitez has bought himself a little bit of time there.
Holgate showed while playing out of position on the left that he has is a solid defender and proved why he was once described as ‘complete‘ by Carlo Ancelotti.
With the club needing to turn their season around, they need good quality depth options after suffering with injuries all season and Godfrey provides that. He also has the quality to start games and the club would be silly to let him leave right now.
It’s a decision that is likely to go down well with the player and the fans and now Godfrey deserves a chance to push on and become a regular member of the starting lineup in his preferred centre-back role.
