Andy Gray full of praise for new Everton signing Nathan Patterson
Everton new arrival Nathan Patterson has had praise heaped upon his shoulders by former Goodison Park favourite Andy Gray.
The 20-year-old joined from Rangers for £16million earlier in January and was involved in the squad who played against Hull City in the FA Cup.
Gray has likened the right-back to current Toffees captain Seamus Coleman and has backed him to succeed in Merseyside.
“Nathan can make an impact,” Gray said on Everton’s website, “I like him a lot.
“He’s gone into the international set-up and slid into that team quite comfortably and quite confidently, which I like.
“He doesn’t look out of place. He’s not walking about the football pitch playing for Scotland and thinking: ‘I don’t know if I should be here’.
“He’s got a really good attitude and I think he will be a massive success and a great signing for Everton, I really do.”
He needs to play
As much of a risk as it would be to play a 20-year-old with little experience in the Premier League, you can’t spend £16million on a player and not use them.
Even if he is only coming off the bench at first, Patterson has to be involved or Everton should have left him in Scotland.
Encouragingly though, everyone seems to believe that Patterson can get into the Toffees starting lineup and keep his place there.
Jonjoe Kenny currently occupies the right wing-back position but his place is far from safe so a standout performance could be all that is required to barge his way in.
Coleman is still around the club but he is now utilised as one of three centre-halves given how his age has taken away a yard of pace from the Irishman.
