Everton and Aston Villa agree £25million fee for Lucas Digne

Wantaway Everton left-back Lucas Digne is one step closer to a move away from Goodison Park with a £25million fee agreed by Aston Villa.

According to Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, the 28-year-old is due in Birmingham today to complete his medical and likely sign on the dotted line.

Digne had attracted interest from Premier League rivals such as Chelsea and Newcastle United but the Villains beat them out for the left-back.

It has been quite the saga in recent weeks with Digne and Everton manager Rafael Benitez in a rather public falling out.

The 61-year-old Spaniard hasn’t held back on Digne whenever asked by the media and the writing has been on the wall for some time.

And when a player is kicking up a fuss in the dressing room, as Digne has been doing, then it needs to be dealt with swiftly, one way or another.

It became clear fairly early on that Digne didn’t want to stay on Merseyside so trying to talk him round to civility wasn’t really an option.

That leaves just one option, get rid. Digne hasn’t played a minute since the Toffees’ 4-1 Merseyside defeat to Liverpool and he won’t play again for the club.

This £25million deal is a rare case where the move works for all three parties.

Digne will be happy to leave Goodison Park and Aston Villa are getting a quality player, regardless of his actions in the past month.

Everton meanwhile get a player who hasn’t featured for a number of games out of the club and are receiving a big sum of money for the privilege.

It’s a strange and rare phenomenon in football but you can’t see there being too many disappointed people on either side of the fence.

In other Everton news, an approach has been made for this player to move in the opposite direction to Digne.
