Everton 'have approached' Aston Villa for Anwar El Ghazi - David Ornstein

Everton ‘have approached’ Aston Villa over a transfer for winger Anwar El Ghazi in January, with a permanent and loan deal discussed according to David Ornstein.

The clubs are currently in advanced talks for left-back Lucas Digne [Florian Plettenberg], who is leaving Goodison Park after a fall-out with Rafa Benitez but new reports claim that the clubs are also discussing Dutch wide man El Ghazi in a separate deal.

It was reported earlier in the day that Everton wanted to sign El Ghazi and that Aston Villa have valued the 26-year-old at £15m [John Percy]. However Ornstein has offered an update on the negotiations now.

According to The Athletic, via Ornstein’s personal Twitter account, the clubs are ‘continuing’ talks over a permanent or loan deal for the player. He says Everton ‘know the valuation’ of the player.

El Ghazi has started just four Premier League games this season, netting one goal and registering one assist. He has featured for just 44 minutes since Steven Gerrard took over as manager in the Premier League.

Weird one

It’s an interesting deal for the club to be pursuing so vigorously, with El Ghazi not offering much difference compared to the other wide players in the squad.

Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have arguably been Everton’s best players this season, while youngster Anthony Gordon has become a mainstay in the first-team with some impressive performances himself.

Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are both key players too, so bringing in El Ghazi suggests that the club either are looking to go in a different direction tactically or aren’t convinced by current options.

El Ghazi is a player who is never afraid of shooting, is a fearless dribbler and someone who has a good eye for goal. Everton have struggled in front of goal, scoring just 23 times in 18 games so far and sitting in 15th place.

If Benitez wants to add some goal threat and experience to his side then El Ghazi fits the bill, but it’s certainly a transfer that will raise some eyebrows.
