Lucas Digne in parting shot on Instagram as he exits Everton

Lucas Digne made clear who he holds responsible for his Everton exit as he posted a heartfelt message to the club and its fans on his Instagram page.

The full-back posted on Wednesday night as he makes the move to Aston Villa and was filled with warm feelings towards the Toffees, with the notable exception of one unnamed person.

The French international had fallen out with manager Rafael Benitez, leading to his exit from the club.

“What has happened and some things that was said about me in the last month has made me very sad.

“But I will not enter a war on words with anyone,” wrote the former Barcelona player.

“The club don’t deserve that, the fans don’t deserve that – and to be honest, I don’t feel that I deserve that.

“Sometimes it only takes one person from outside to destroy a beautiful love affair.”

Painful exit

The message contained in the online post could hardly be clearer as the episode which saw a key member of the starting XI frozen out comes to an end.

Digne had nothing but praise and good wishes for both the fans and the club itself, making quite plain how much he enjoyed his time at Goodison, but made quite clear that he did not feel the same way about everyone.

It does not take a detective to infer that he is likely to have been referring to his now-former manager when he refers to the “one person from outside” who ruined the situation.

His reference to the person being from the outside could simply point to the fact that everything was going well until the Spanish boss was appointed after Carlo Ancelotti’s surprise exit.

But with many Everton fans unable to accept Benitez thanks to his history with Liverpool this language is sure to have struck a chord.

Digne wrote of his dream being to help the club out of the unhappy situation they currently find themselves in, but that will no longer be possible.

Fans will surely wish him well as he leaves but the situation has left a bitter taste for the player himself.

In other Everton news, this continental star is reportedly open to a move to Goodison.
