Kevin Campbell: Rafa Benitez has to address Everton 'weakness' as Townsend and Gray save the day
We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…
Kevin Campbell has insisted that Everton have major weaknesses that Rafa Benitez has to address sooner rather than later.
The ex-Toffees talisman reacted to the 3-2 win at Hull in the FA Cup this week, where Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend saved the day again.
Everton are continuously conceding goals, something that only took a minute against the struggling Championship side.
“Gray and Townsend, they’ve again proven to be the difference most of the time,” he exclusively told Goodison News.
“You have to say that Everton do shoot themselves in the foot sometimes. A free header in your own box after a minute? That’s not right.
“There’s a weakness in that team that needs addressing, Rafa Benitez has to address that for Everton’s fortunes to change. You can’t keep conceding silly goals.”
This is happening far too often.
An established Premier League side should not be conceding goals as easily as the Toffees are in recent weeks and months, and that is down to Benitez.
Is there only so much the Spaniard can do though? Not marking men in the box the first time it is chipped in is schoolboy stuff.
Let’s hope this can be addressed sooner rather than later, or we will continue to slide down the table – Gray and Townsend can’t save us every week.
